Is having malware in the registry very serious?

Recently, spybot told me I had malware in the registary and it removed it. I am wondering what that exactly meant. I understand tracking cookies but can anyone tell me a little more about this kind of malware. I did not get much help from google so far.|||It could have been anything. Many malwares use the registry for any number of things. Chances are, it was making an entry to open itself during boot, so the program would automatically run when you start your computer. If Spybot said it got it, chances are it did. But, I would monitor with Spybot and probably download Ccleaner too.
