Why did my computer get a Malware virus when I downloaded Steam?

Steam is a software used to play certain online games, like Team Fortress. I have never heard of any problems regarding it, yet when I tried to install it on my laptop, my computer started acting in the same way it had when I got a Malware virus one time. There seems to be no reason for this, from what I know of it (which isn't very much, admittedly). If anyone can give me a reason why this may have happened, I'd appreciate it.|||This all depends on where you installed it, whether it's the legit version of Steam or an altered one, etc. If you installed it from any old download site, that would be the reason.|||Download Malwarebytes and Combofix from a clean computer. Boot into safe mode no networking. Install and run each from there.

Then install Avast

It might be some OS incompatibility as well.
